For Flute, Alto Saxophone, Guitar, Harp
Duration- 7:00
No matter what culture a person identifies with, folktales and folksongs are guaranteed staples. When Kristina, the commissioning Harpist, presented me with the opportunity to write for her unique ensemble, she let me know that this was theme of the concert. While I do not often put many cultural references I my works, I was very excited by this opportunity to explore folk-based arts.
Tales Told Fireside is a 2-movement work based on the tradition of passing history through storytelling and song. Tales of Tradition and Warning opens with a hymn like duet between the string instruments of the ensemble, and later gives way to story-like melodies. A sudden acceleration reflects the underlying warning of the narrative. Tales of Spirit and Reverence depicts a problem that occurs in most oral traditions: different iterations of the story as years go by. In this instance, the flute and guitar give a more upbeat and festive version, while the saxophone and harp show a more docile version. Eventually there is reconciliation between the 2 and the versions mash together. These parings give homage to the 2 duos that formed to create this quartet.
