Program Notes:
Break the Chains That Bind is a piece centered on tension and release. The chains in question could be construed as either mental... or physical. Whether it is societal pressures, familial guilt trips, or a reflection of the events of horrid parts of history that affect us today, we are all shackled in some way. The anvil signifies the breaking of these bindings, with a failed first attempt earlier in the piece. Later on at the end of the percussion break the hammering is successful and the chains are finally broken. A mad dash to thefinish ensues, noted by the accelerando at the end.
